Chapter 19
They reached Arrojo in the early evening. Adele swung her head back to look at the sky as they walked home. The violet and blue shadows behind the clouds always filled her with the peace she had sought after her father died three years ago.
âHatfield wanted a report of our trip the moment we arrived,â Jackson said.
âDo you mind if I come along?â Adele asked.
Jackson shrugged. âIâm sure Lady Augusta will be happy to see you.â
Adele was happy to receive the warm smile from the woman, who sat with her son in the parlor. Rowena, Lady Augustaâs companion and housekeeper, was nowhere to be found.
âSheâs gone to help Mrs. Taylor serve dinner to her guests,â said Lady Augusta. âIt seems one of the servants there ââ
âLilly?â Adele asked.
âNo, no, the other one, the one who looks like a mangy dog,â said the woman, waving her hand.
âSally,â she said with a smile.
âShe went in a swoon this afternoon,â the elderly woman continued. âShe was washing dishes, or doing some such drudgery, when she saw Miss Gibbâs ghost floating out of the pantry. It looked straight at her, or so she says. And just to add color to the story, the ghost had the face of Miss Gibb in death, not in life.â
âScullery maids have wild imaginations,â Jackson said.
âItâs not entirely imagination,â said Sheriff Hatfield. âIt seems she caught a glimpse of Miss Gibbâs face when the men took the body to the morgue.â
âThe poor girl,â Adele said.
âHoratio! You should never have allowed it. That was most careless.â Lady Augusta hit him in the leg with her cane.
âIâve already reprimanded Edison about that, Ma,â Hatfield assured her. âI also had a chat with Dr. Rhodes.â The last he said with a grim smile.
âI hope you werenât too hard on him,â said Adele. âEdison, I mean.â
âAs hard as the law requires,â said Lady Augusta with her eye on her son. âI believe sometimes Horatio forgets heâs no longer the captain of his own ship.â
Hatfield looked away.
Adele rose. âIf Rowena is out, youâve no one to make tea. Iâll be glad to do it.â
âNonsense. Horatio!â The blast came out in the scratchy command. âMake tea for our guests.â
âIâd be happy to, Ma.â He slid his chair back.
âIâll go,â Adele insisted.
âI donât mean to interfere,â said Jackson in a light voice, âbut Del makes a fine cup of tea, sir.â
âBetter than mine, Iâm sure,â Hatfield said with a lopsided grin.
Adele made the tea as quickly as she could, as she knew her brother was already telling Hatfield of their trip in Sacramento, and she wanted to hear what he would say about Mr. Bain.
As she came in with the tea tray, she heard Hatfield ask, âSo he struck you as the usual sort of businessman?â
âThe usual sort of a certain type of businessman,â Jackson corrected.
âWe didnât see Mr. Burke.â Adele accepted Lady Augusta shooing her away so she could play hostess and pour the tea. âMr. Bain told us he was away.â
âBut he offered to send a wire to call him back and arrange a meeting so we can speak with him,â Jackson put in.
